America is now facing a very dark period in its history. Two police officers were recently killed in cold blood in New York City. These officers had absolutely zero connection to the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, or Eric Garner on Staten Island.
Yet, some who have witnessed the scene actually say that “they deserved it.” Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were executed in cold blood simply for being police officers. Both of them were recently reassigned from anti-terror patrols to tasks that involved providing enhanced security at a public housing development in Brooklyn.
All throughout the New York area, the killing of the officers has generated a general wave of sympathy for them and revulsion at the crime. But these feelings weren’t universal. Outside the Woodhull Hospital, were the two officers were taken following the shooting, a passerby told cops standing guard outside that they were a “bunch of killers.” Others simply hurled profanity at the officers.
At the scene of the shooting, some witnesses report that a few people in the crowd seemed to find the situation funny, even clapping and laughing. Certain individuals were shouting that the cops deserved what they got.
The suspect behind the shootings, Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley had a lengthy criminal record. The 28-year-old man from Baltimore apparently had 31 arrests on his record. He fled the scene after the shootings and then took his own life after being chased by police down to a subway platform.
