The more the American public hears from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, the more it seems as if the man may not be very well-suited for the job with which he’s been tasked.
His not-so-auspicious debut started off with a contentious introduction to the press, and the situation seems to have spiraled downward ever since then. It wasn’t long before people online started combing through Spicer’s past tweets, and the situation became ever more strange after Spicer’s odd negative comments about the ice cream company Dippin’ Dots were noticed.
However, a few subsequent tweets quickly took the focus off of the Dippin’ Dots controversy. On January 25, Spicer tweeted out a nonsensical series of letters that appeared to be a password. After the internet caught wind of this unbelievable error, joke tweets abounded. However, the ridicule didn’t seem to do much to stem Spicer’s enthusiasm for tweeted out garbled nonsense. The next day, he did it again. This time, bloggers really took notice, sending Spicer’s error into the stratosphere.
Spicer’s seeming inability to handle his Twitter account took on a whole new level of strangeness on January 28, when he retweeted an Onion article about himself. The problem was that The Onion is a satirical publication—and the article was not quite as flattering as perhaps Spicer believed it to be. Titled “5 Things to Know about Sean Spicer”, it started with a question about what Spicer’s role in the Trump administration is. The answer was “to provide the American public with robust and clearly articulated misinformation.”
The video goes on to poke fun of Spicer’s defensive attitude with the press, in addition to his work history and even his suit. Since it seems difficult to imagine that Spicer would consider such a video to be humorous—and then to knowingly retweet it—many believe that this, like his other online errors, was just a big mistake. If Spicer keeps making these blunders, it’s anyone’s guess how long he’s going to last in the least-wanted job in the world.
