Fourteen year old Ahmed Mohamed, your average everyday Texas student, recently hit the headlines in spectacular fashion after being arrested for taking a homemade clock to school. Because of his Arabic background and religion, his teacher jumped to the worst possible conclusion and called the authorities, on suspicion that the young boy had brought a bomb to school. As a result, young Ahmed was swiftly arrested and detained for several unjust hours.
After hearing of the young student’s arrest, as well as the snarky non-apology that the school’s principal extended to parents in explanation of the incident, President Barack Obama swooped in and invited Ahmed to the White House in order to meet the boy personally. And he told him to bring his cool clock, too.
In response, those conservative members of the far right have taken up their favorite activity – Obama bashing – with renewed vigor and a profound sense of entitlement.
From Faux News pundits to the average Rush Limbaugh ditto head, their comments on social media websites range from mildly insulting to actively nauseating. Some reiterate the ancient and tired charges of birtherism, while others play on classic racist stereotypes, updated with an anti-Muslim twist. They even went so far as to claim, in one article that the boy and his family had masterminded their way into subversively provoking the teachers into a frenzy and calling the cops in order to get media attention. They are trying everything to spin this against Obama and the democrats right now
But it’s hard, you know? Hard to make some innocent muslim kid who was stoked about his homemade clock look like a terrorist mastermind. So good luck fox! It’d be sad to see the world through your eyes.
